8: The dark at the end of the tunnel
Cave 1 is a long hollowed out cave entrance that opens up far inside. This shot was taken from halfway along the tiny entrance using a camera on a long pole. The dark spot is where the main cave starts we think. That is where they are... (apologies for photo clarity, it's difficult to move in that confined space.)
Had I not entered the valley from the wrong end, had I not stopped to look at something, and had I not been aware of what to look for (all by accident) - I would have missed it as all others have. Because even if anyone managed to stumble upon it and have a look inside - without knowing the story behind the whole event, they would be none the wiser! I did not find this cave and those inside it, they found me. If you read the section on why we started this blog, you will understand why.
Unlike most caves that once had water flowing through them, or still do, this cave is now entirely dry. It is likely a phreatic tube which is formed by fast flows of water. But the cave at the end of it poses a question...Is it a dead end or does it travel up into the hills as local geology says it should. Is it a natural cave or a cavern purposely dug for the storage of the dead? I'm just posing the question - we will find out soon enough.
