Sidestep: More unusual pendants...

Below is a collection of photos all from Te Papa this time. They show an interesting array of pendants (Maukaki) mainly from the South Island and one from Wanganui (use the search bar above to find more unusual items from Wanganui).

They are ordered as oldest to latest and the dates start at around 1100AD, that being before Maori arrived in numbers yet the art forms are precise. The only obvious Polynesian item is the first and oldest. The first is distinctly Tahitian. The second item is the Wanganui items as is supposed to be of Polynesian shape but to date I cannot find a corresponding Polynesian shaped object but if someone else can, please contact us to advise where the picture can be located.

Very Archaic in shape and design and with the notching Maori were not known generally known for. Any item such as they above and below are most likely from the previous inhabitants of this land before the Polynesian came here.
