Sidestep: Strange markings
The items pictured below is made of serpentine and was found on Fisherman's Island in Tasman Bay.
It belongs to the group of pendants which Duff has named “hybrid reels,” a temporary name which is retained only until additional examples enable a satisfactory name to be devised. The relationship of the group to the Cook Islands rei, pointed out by Duff, is clearly justified. The incised decorative motives are unusual; at first glance they seem allied to some Easter Island designs. They are allied, though not closely, to Maori decorative motives. All seven known pendants of this New Zealand group are from the Cook Strait area, probably due to their raw material, serpentine, being derived from that area.
Unfortunately, apart from the old record this came from there is no modern picture or not of where this artefact now resides that I can find.
The marking are not unlike those of the chiseled rock at Raglan.
