Sidestep : LiDAR in archaeological sites
Imagine what a LiDAR survey of the entire country could reveal. Especially in Kaiatia, the Waikato coastline, parts of the Taranaki coastline such as Okehu and Waitotara, and the sand areas of the Kaipara and Hokianga harbours. If I had the money I'd finance it myself just to be the first to see what's hidden that is not easily perceived by the naked eye. We know there were peoples here before Polynesians but there settlements are overrun by more extensive earthworks including fortified pa. Imagine what we might learn if the findings were open. What would we find in the virgin forest areas of Waipoua? (so far no one has shown us anything inside the original forest - only the old famed and now pinus radiata planted sections)
Just imagine...
Old walls
Wairarapa
What would LiDar show in this specific spot? We know it would surprise many...
The detail that is available
Imagine what's still hidden in area of bush and forest like Kaingaroa and Kaimanawa. Imagine the extra finds and unknown sites between the magic line of Raglan and Port Waikato; it's a veritable goldmine in there. Even old cave entrances that are covered up would be able to be seen.
