Sidestep: The Japanese Giant artifacts
Once able to be viewed as far back as 2002 these items have now since disappeared from the main museum display.
The manufacture of such an extraordinarily long blade would have only been possible in the hands of a highly skilled swordsmith. Therefore, it is plausible that the Norimitsu Odachi was purely meant to showcase the swordsmith’s ability. In addition, the person who commissioned the Norimitsu Odachi would probably have been very wealthy, as it would have cost a lot to produce such an object.
4 of the objects (12 in total) were like pole axes where the spearlike blade was attached to the side of the shaft and used in a chopping motion. There were also 2 enormous spear points All items were three times the size of normal weapons.
Most swords of the era were straight single ended withy a cutting blade length 2-3ft. Yet these giant blades were from 6-8ft. There was also a wooden shield about 5' tall. Traditionally they used shields like this for special warfare so no it wasn't carried by a giant.
With the exception of the shield, these items may simply be ceremonial items. But if so why are they now hidden in the basement? When museums do this all the time it just adds to the speculation.
