Sidestep: Wairau Adzes

From the Wairau Bar site, these adzes were found.


Duff comments that the adze on the left is too heavy for use. So was it ceremonial or was it the finished example of an adze of a people here before Polynesian arrivals that were bigger than Polynesians? The lugs at the top of the one on the right are a clue. It is likely a ceremonial adze owned by a chief or similar.




Below is another adze from Wairau



This is not a Polynesian style or is it? It doesn't match a common type in NZ. It does match some found on Pitcairn Island as shown below here...
